1. SEO Friendly Theme: if your site is online, the first thing to consider is an SEO friendly theme and wordpress provides a lot of free themes, so, choosing the right one is a step to optimizing your site or blog. Before installing a theme, you can run a demo version of it on google web.dev to check its performance and SEO friendliness.

2. Preferred Domain: secondly, you need to set your preferred domain. Head over to Settings > General : you will be able to set it there and ensure your blog has an SSL certificate installed and it is running on HTTPS and not HTTP.

3. Permalink: you need to set your permalink to one that is SEO friendly. To do this, click on Settings > Permalink: click on “Post Name”. This one is best for SEO compared to the “Plain” which is the default one set by WordPress.

NOTE: If your blog is already old and you want to change this, always install a 404 Redirect Plugin, so as to redirect old permalink to the new one or Homepage.

4. Free WordPress SEO Plugin: install a free WordPress SEO plugin; a WordPress SEO plugin will not automatically optimize your site or webpages but makes it possible to do on page optimization process on WordPress. The Plugin I will recommend is “Rankmaths”.

To install rankmaths plugin, click on navigation button and go to ” Plugin > Add New”. Search for rankmaths, install and activate: follow setup wizard to configure and connect it with your site.

Before optimizing your posts, the first to consider is:

  • Keyword Research: one of the best tool for keyword research is ahrefs and MOZ. Always choose USA as preferred country and always choose keywords with low difficulty i.e. below 40.
  • After keyword research, add keyword to H1 Heading.
  • Add keyword to permalink. If this is not added, click on “Edit Permalink” in your content editor area and input keyword there. When this is done, you bypass the default permalink settings.
  • Add keywords and subheadings to H2, H3, H4, H5, H6 headings.
  • Ensure focus keyword is in the 1st paragraph.
  • Optimize your images by ensuring focus keyword is used as the image name. You can do this by renaming image before upload or install Phoenix Media Rename Plugin to rename your images.
  • Add keyword to “Alt Text” in images on your posts. It is necessary you add an image to your post. To do this, click on “Add Media > Upload”: select image you want to upload, after loading, go to image “Alt Text” and add focus keyword and insert to post.
  • Link Images to “Attachement Page“. The “Link To” option is below the Alt Text when uploading an image. Click on it and choose “Attachment Page”. This is good for SEO and its also another form of “Internal Linking”.
  • Link to other contents on your blog (Internal Linking).
  • Link to other sites with high DA (External Linking).
  • Add Table of Contents to your post. I have a plugin that automatically turns my headings and subheadings to table of contents.
  • Ensure your focus keyword appears in your content 3-5 times.
  • Add focus keyword to rankmaths and  SEO meta description. You can do this by clicking on Edit Snippet provided by rankmaths. NOTE: You can add more than 1 focus keyword.
  • On a final note, post regularly and be consistent.
